This article aims to examine the context of Western imperial expansion in the nineteenth century, which significantly affected countries in Southeast Asia, including Siam. It also analyzes the strategic royal visits to Europe undertaken by King Chulalongkorn as an important diplomatic and political instrument for establishing relations with Western powers. This study employs documentary research by analyzing historical documents and relevant academic works in order to explain the objectives and significance of the two royal visits to Europe. The findings reveal that the royal visits to Europe were not merely ceremonial visits of goodwill; rather, they represented a crucial strategy to strengthen diplomatic relations with Western nations, reduce pressures from imperialism, and reshape the international image of Siam as a civilized and progressive state in the eyes of the global community. Furthermore, these visits provided Siam with opportunities to learn about Western concepts of governance, public administration, and scientific and technological advancements. Such ideas were later adapted and implemented in various national reforms, including administrative reorganization, the development of a modern bureaucratic system, economic restructuring, and the improvement of public infrastructure. These reforms played a significant role in laying the foundation for the development of a modern state in Siam. Therefore, the royal visits to Europe during the reign of King Chulalongkorn can be regarded as a key strategy that enabled Siam to adapt to global transformations and successfully preserve its national independence.en_US
