| Abstract: | This article aims to: 1) examine concepts regarding the roles of museums and exhibitions as cultural spaces; 2) analyze the roles of museums and exhibitions in promoting art learning in multicultural societies; and 3) propose guidelines for organizing art education activities using museums and exhibitions to promote learning in multicultural societies. The article synthesizes concepts related to multiculturalism, museum studies, and art education, together with case studies of museums and art and cultural learning resources in Thailand and relevant research. The findings reveal that museums and exhibitions play significant roles in promoting art learning in multicultural societies in five areas: 1) fostering understanding of cultural diversity through art; 2) promoting respect for and acceptance of cultural differences; 3) reducing prejudice and promoting intercultural understanding; 4) promoting analytical thinking and art interpretation; and 5) fostering cultural identity and global citizenship. Furthermore, the guidelines for organizing art education activities using museums and exhibitions in multicultural societies should be structured as a continuous three-level process: 1) awareness and understanding; 2) analysis and comparison; and 3) participation and meaning-making. These processes can be implemented through six activities: 1) observing and analyzing artworks from diverse cultures; 2) comparing art across cultures; 3) learning through questioning and discussion; 4) creating artworks inspired by cultural contexts; 5) organizing student exhibitions; and 6) connecting museums with communities and local learning resources. |
