The selection of shampoo ginger (Zingiber spectabilis)

Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to select the shampoo ginger (Zingiber spectabilis) for cut flower that was outstanding characteristic comprising with large inflorescence shape, the color of young inflorescence bracts were yellow, orange or reddish brown and red when mature stage. Flowers were bilabiate form with violet and white or yellow spots labellum. The experiment was conducted between 2017-2020 at Trang Horticultural Research Centre. The germplasm collection of Zingiber species was carried through out of Thailand. The criteria selection was number of flowers at least 8 flowers per clump per year straight inflorescence peduncle and long vase life. The result showed that 7 cultivars were selected comprising Z071, Z058, Z075, Z092, Z093, Z094 and Z095. The yield were 8-10 flowers/ clump /year. The long inflorescences were 33.30 - 57.8 cm with 14.4 - 43.5 cm. of stalk, 1.0-1.6 cm of stalk diameter, 71.2-191.1 of bracts, yelloworange and red group of bract s color and 7-8 days of vase life. The growth parameters, there were 85.0-222.0 cm of high, 1.2-2.0 cm of stem diameter. The leaves were 6.5-9.2 cm wide and 29.2-39.0 cm long. In addition, the selected shampoo ginger was planted to compare the different areas for the propose as a recommended cultivar of the Department of Agriculture and recommend to the farmers.
