Development of Lady's slipper (Paphiopedilum sp.)

Abstract

The development of lady’s slipper aimed to select the potential clones of Lady’s slippers (Paphiopedilum sp.) for commercial purposes. This experiment was carried out at Trang Horticultural Research Centre since October 2015 until September 2021. 21 hybrids of the 231 potential clones of Lady’s slippers were selected with the criteria of growth performance, flowering, characteristics, and size. The results showed that there were 3 hybrid clones showing a good performance. The first was N10 (Lueang-krabi (KB.65)xLueang-krabi (KB.24)), giving 11 plants per pot. Its size was 4.9 cm. x 6.9 cm and was blossoming during November to December. This was earlier than in flowering season (March to June). Its dorsal sepal and lateral petals are white color and the petals were the yellow and brown also its lip color is in the range of yellow to orange. Moreover, its staminode was yellow. The second was Q59 (Lueang-prajeen (K.0.39)xLueang-prajeen (K.056)), It showed 3 plants per pot blossoming since December until August. The flower size was 6.2 cm.x5.5 cm. with the color of white to yellow range on the petals and largely dotted purple towards base. The last was U08 (Khao-Satun (A3B2-11)xLueang-prajeen (K.056)), it gave 2 plants per pot growing and blossoming every year. The size of full flower was 6.3 cm. x4.9 cm. with thick petals. Flower shape and its characteristics were similar to Lueangprajeen K.056 clone but the spreading dotted around the petals showed a bit bigger than Khao-Satun A3B2-11.
