A survey of the views of the European LGBT community living in Thailand towards same-sex marriage law in Thailand

Abstract

Many countries do have same-sex marriage laws to promote the equality of LGBT groups. However, despite several attempts, Thailand has not enacted any such laws. This survey was conducted to hear the voices of the European LGBT community who live in Thailand towards same-sex marriage law in the country. Clearly, they are stakeholders if these laws are enacted. An online questionnaire was chosen as the method to gather information because it protected the anonymity of the respondent’s identity. Results from 103 respondents showed that most agreed that Thailand should allow same-sex marriage even if they had no plans to marry their same-sex partners in the country. Respondents said that being LGBT, they faced an inequality in terms of social acceptance. Whilst, they did not think that their basic rights were infringed upon, most respondents agreed that if Thailand allowed same-sex marriage, it would promote equality in Thai society for LGBT people.

หลายประเทศทั่วโลกมีกฎหมายที่อนุญาติให้คู่รักเพศเดียวกันสมรสกันได้ เพื่อความเสมอภาคของกลุ่มบุคคลรักร่วม เพศ (LGBT) ถึงแม้จะมีความพยายามเรียกร้องจากกลุ่มคนในสังคมบ้างแล้วก็ตาม แต่ประเทศไทยยังไม่เคยมีกฎหมายนี้ งานวิจัยนี้จึงเกิดขึ้นเพื่อสำรวจทัศนคติของชาวยุโรปที่มีความหลากหลายทางเพศที่พำนักอยู่ในประเทศไทย ต่อกฎหมายสมรส ระหว่างเพศเดียวกัน อันเนื่องจากกลุ่มเป้าหมายเป็นผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียต่อการออกกฎหมายนี้ ผู้วิจัยใช้แบบสอบถามออนไลน์ เพื่อเก็บข้อมูล เนื่องจากเป็นวิธีที่สามารถปกปิดตัวตนของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามได้ดี มีผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจำนวน 103 คน ผล การสำรวจพบว่า ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่เห็นด้วยว่าประเทศไทยควรจะมีการออกกฎหมายอนุญาติให้มีการสมรส ระหว่างเพศเดียวกันได้ ถึงแม้ว่าผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนมากไม่ได้ประสงค์จะสมรสกับคู่รักของตนในประเทศไทยก็ตาม ผู้ตอบ แบบสอบถามให้ความเห็นว่าการเป็นเพศทางเลือกนั้นไม่ได้รับการยอมรับอย่างเท่าเทียมกันในสังคม แต่ไม่รู้สึกว่าถูกริดรอน สิทธิที่ตนเองพึงมีพึงได้ ดังนั้นการออกกฎหมายสมรสเพศเดียวกันจะทำให้เกิดความเท่าเทียมกันในสังคมและช่วยให้กลุ่มคน เพศทางเลือกได้รับการยอมรับมากขึ้น
